BLUEM
BLUEM is the project of Chiara Floris, a Sardinian artist based in London who combines music and visuals. After debuting in 2018 with Picolina, she returned to Italian with NOTTE (2021), a work praised for its emotional intensity. Her album Nou (2023) expands her universe into cinematic soundscapes and explores femininity through electronic pop and instrumental compositions.
I'll be honest: I had no idea who BLUEM was before writing these lines. I play her most listened-to song, “Martedi,” which already has over two million streams. Once again, have you all become fans of an artist and forgotten to tell me? Since I didn’t look at the title, the Italian takes me by surprise. A guitar plays and a distant voice comes in, like through a transistor. Then some English words mix in until the voice—sweet and sober at the same time—reaches me clearly, over a tender beat that reminds me of that The XX album we all carried around on our iPods back in 2009. I like it. I play it again. I like it even more. We're on repeat. I have no idea what she’s saying, but honestly, who doesn’t love throwing out Italian words at random and pretending the song is about exactly what you need to hear at that moment?
