L'ARANNÀ
L'arannà is an Ibiza-Catalan duo that builds a fascinating bridge between electronic avant-garde and the oral traditions of the Pityusic Islands. Their music brings together sonic experimentation and the popular culture of Ibiza and Formentera, placing the cant redoblat at the heart of their work, an ancestral vocal technique unique to these islands and preserved today by only a handful of practitioners. Through synthesizers, contemporary textures, and a deep respect for intangible cultural heritage, the duo rescues this tradition from oblivion and projects it into the future, creating a live performance that is hypnotic, mystical, and deeply rooted in memory.
“El gran misteri del món és el mar”, wrote the author Mercè Rodoreda. And, as we all know, a good mystery always draws you in. I looked up the meaning of l’arannà online, and since I couldn't quite make sense of it, I imagined my own meaning. And everything led me back to Rodoreda and the sea. Perhaps because they have set her work to music, or because they are two women from the coast, whenever I think of L’ARANNÀ, I picture a wave carrying ancient waters to the shore, waters that return forever renewed. Much like their music: a finely tuned balance between tradition and modernity. And within that mystery, in their music — just as in the sea — you know that once you step in, you are unlikely to come out unchanged.
