Ão is a boundary-breaking Belgian quartet blending electronica, art pop, Afro pop, saudade and alternative Latin into a singular, genre-defying vocalist. Brenda Corijn channels her Mozambican-Portuguese heritage through Portuguese and English vocals, merging with Siebe Chau’s guitar, Jolan Decaestecker’s electronics and Bert Peyffers’ eclectic percussion. Their live shows create an immersive, hypnotic world where fragile melodies and dance-driven energy keep shifting, a feeling also echoed in their new album Malandra.

There is a way to escape homogeneity: to bring together Mozambique, Portugal and the Netherlands and find one another beyond the conventions of the European Council. Because Saudade, which is untranslatable, always finds a place to exist in every language in the world, and they, from Belgium, remind us that we can long for things that transcend us. Their music, like everything that is humanly universal, soothes and comforts.
